Every year, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater comes to Southern California for a series of concerts and events, and this year the offerings are especially good and relatively close by. I’ll be posting information regarding the various events throughout the week.
Dance 6 students will be reading and watching the work of Donald McKayle and Alvin Ailey for their next assignment, so going to any one of the Ailey events will be a meaningful tie-in to our class!
The first big event is free, family-friendly, and did I say free???
REVELATIONS CELEBRATION will be held this SATURDAY, MAY 22 in the plaza area next to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa (right across the street from South Coast Plaza.)
Here is the website for directions and more information: http://www.scfta.org
Students who wish to use REVELATIONS CELEBRATION for extra credit will need to attend the ENTIRE EVENT (12PM – 3PM) and write a brief paragraph or two describing the movement they learned, and the experience of learning one of Alvin Ailey’s most enduring works.
Here is information from the website about this weekend’s event:
Join us for a free joyous celebration of dance and expression as we celebrate the iconic Alvin Ailey masterpiece “Revelations”. Learn sections of the dance and participate with other community members in a final performance of the work. Other activities and music performances promise to make this a celebration you won’t want to miss.
